If you’ve had a total knee replacement on your left knee and you drive an automatic car, then as soon as you stop taking strong painkillers, I’m happy for my patients to return to driving. If it’s your right knee, then you need to be able to perform an emergency stop. So one of the tests I like to ask my patients to do is whether or not they can hop on their right leg. And as soon as they can do that, then I’m happy for them to return to driving.
