Conditions Diagnosed & Treated
Below is an outline of some of the major hand and wrist disorders that we specialise in here, but typically most issues of the hand and wrist that warrant a specialist referral can be successfully investigated through our team. If you are suffering from hand and wrist problems and are looking for definitive medical support then please let us know.
HAND
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
This condition occurs when the main nerve in the hand is squashed under a thick ligament, causing painful tingling and abnormal sensation of the fingers.
Dupuytren’s disease
Dupuytren’s is a condition where scar tissue gets laid down on normal bands that give shape to the hand, pulling the finger forward with time.
Trigger digit
Trigger digit is where a tendon on the front of the finger or thumb gets stuck in the palm, causing pain and clicking, sometimes needing the other hand to free the finger.
Thumb arthritis
This is wear and tear of the joint at the base of the thumb, leading to pain and stiffness.
Rheumatoid and inflammatory arthritis
These are autoimmune conditions causing damage to ligaments, tendons, and joint cartilage, and often giving a typical pattern of finger deviation.
Thumb ligament injuries (skier’s thumb)
The ligament at the main joint of the thumb is common injured when the thumb bends back, especially with sports injuries.
Small joint arthritis of the hand
This is wear and tear of the small joints of the hand, leading to pain and stiffness.
WRIST
Distal radius fractures (wrist fractures)
The distal radius is commonly fractured following a fall, and needs to set in the correct position to prevent future pain and stiffness.
Wrist arthritis
This is wear and tear of the wrist joint, leading to pain and stiffness.
Scaphoid fractures
The scaphoid is the most commonly broken carpal (wrist) bone, and fractures are commonly missed on x-ray.
Wrist ligament injuries
The wrist has manly complex and important ligaments, and missing a rupture of them can lead to future arthritis.
