Femoroacetabular impingement is an abnormal contact between the femur, the thigh bone, and the pelvis. Around the rim of the socket of the hip, there is a structure called the labrum, which is a bit like a sucker cup, and that can get damaged and torn as a result of this particular condition.
This quite commonly occurs in people who are very sporty, particularly early on in life. So those who’ve played lots of football, or who’ve done lots of dancing, or hockey and those sort of things, tend to be a bit more affected than those who haven’t.
We usually find that there’s an abnormal bump on the front of the hip joint, and that is what gets in the way and causes the damage to the hip joint and to the sucker cup labrum that sits around the outer part of the joint.
