Rupert Wharton is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic surgeon with an NHS base at Kingston Hospital. He has an interest in injuries and degenerative conditions of the hand and wrist, and works closely with hand therapy colleagues to ensure all non operative solutions have been tried before considering surgery.

AREAS OF EXPERTISE

Rupert Wharton is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic surgeon with an NHS base at Kingston Hospital. He has an interest in injuries and degenerative conditions of the hand and wrist, and works closely with hand therapy colleagues to ensure all non operative solutions have been tried before considering surgery. His practice interests include arthroscopy (keyhole surgery) for the wrist, treatment of base of thumb arthritis including joint replacement and fusion, hand and wrist fracture management, Dupuytren’s disease, and treatment of nerve compression syndromes including carpal tunnel syndrome (pressure on the median nerve in the hand) and cubital tunnel syndrome (pressure on the ulnar nerve in the elbow)
  • Current memberships include BOTA, BOA, BSSH, International Wrist Arthroscopy Society, AO, RCS(Eng).
    He was awarded the Soli Lam Travelling Fellowship by the British Orthopaedic Association to the prestigious Institut Kaplan, Barcelona, and Institut de la Main, Paris.
  • He is an alumnus of the British Orthopaedic Association’s Future Leaders Programme 2022, and he is an officer in the Royal Naval Reserve with a keen interest in leadership in healthcare and in the operating theatre.
  • He has sat on the BOTA committee as Publicity Officer and produced the JOINT annual journal. He represented BOTA to the British Orthopaedic Association Professional Practice and Patient Liaison Committees. He was BOTA Linkman for the North West Thames rotation between 2014 and 2020, and ran the deanery core curriculum training 2019-20.
