The hip joint connects the thigh bone to the pelvis. It consists of the femoral head on the femur side and the acetabular cavity on the pelvis side. In a healthy hip, cartilage covers the joint surfaces allowing the bones to move freely against each other. Hip osteoarthritis is a painful condition characterised by progressive damage to the cartilage associated with new bone formation, cystic change, and a loss of joint space.
Total hip replacement surgery is a highly effective operation for painful arthritis of the hip. Most total hip replacement operations use off the shelf implants that come in a range of sizes. However, the anatomy of the hip is complex and can vary greatly from one individual to another. Customised total hip replacements represent the best solution for hip replacement surgery in patients with unusual anatomy. It may also be the implant of choice in the younger or more active elderly patient who requires a hip replacement that perfectly recreates their anatomy and hip biomechanics. These implants are based on a 3D model of one’s femur from a CT scan and is manufactured on a just-in-time basis for delivery a few weeks later.
Mr MB is a 63-year-old man (see image above) with severe osteoarthritis of his right hip who underwent a right total hip replacement under the care of Mr Oragui from Grosvenor Orthopaedic Partners using a customised Symbios total hip replacement. Just a few weeks after surgery he is pain free in his right hip and mobilising independently without aides.
