What will happen on the day of my knee replacement surgery?

Patients having a total knee replacement will usually come into hospital first thing in the morning. They will be seen in the preoperative assessment area by the anaesthetist and by me. Where we’ll go through again, the procedure in some detail.
The anaesthetic usually takes about 30 minutes. The operation itself, around 60 to 90 minutes. Following this, you’ll be transferred to our recovery ward and once you’re feeling more awake and you’ve had a cup of tea, we’ll let you come back up to the ward.

You’ll be out of bed on the same day of surgery. Our physiotherapists will see you at that point and get your walking around so that you can really build up your confidence on your knee. Most of my patients go home the next day following a knee replacement operation.
