Alex – Bimalleolar Ankle Fracture – Patient Story

Jul 24, 2025 | Foot + Ankle, General News

Alex suffered a bimalleolar ankle fracture in November 2024 whilst playing rugby. He had pins and a plate fixed during his admittance to A&E.

Although healing, the pins in the fixation broke in February 2025, a week or so before they were due to be removed.  In March 2025 we had an initial consultation with Mr Tim Sinnett as we had been advised that, now broken, the pins could remain and we wanted a second opinion on this as they were causing Alex some irritation and movement restriction. As a parent all you want in those situations is for your child to recover fully and go back to the life they loved.

Within a few minutes of meeting Mr Sinnett and him assessing the X-rays, Alex was reassured that he would make a full recovery under his care.  No one had said this to him before this point and it was an enormous relief to us all.

Mr Sinnett’s first questions to Alex were around the sports he played and his positions within those teams. It was clear from the outset that he understood and empathised with Alex’s desire to get back on to the sports pitch. One thing that stood out to me was that Mr Sinnett spoke directly to Alex during this session rather than his rather worried parents.

Later in March Alex was operated on by Mr Sinnett and he removed the broken pins in his ankle. At every single stage of the process it felt like Mr Sinnett knew Alex as an individual, treated him as such and with the utmost care.  At all stages under his care Mr Sinnett he was exceptional – he allayed parental fears when things seemed to not be quite moving as we thought, offered advice on a call from his holiday, and moved appointments round to fit in with Alex’s GCSE timetable.

The care was utterly outstanding, and as a mother I can honestly say I am astonished how quickly Alex improved. From his end of March operation he was in the gym, running, and back playing football seven weeks later; and back to winning his first tournament four weeks after that. Something we could only have dreamt of back in November.

I have no doubt none of this would have happened without the intervention, care, kindness, and expertise that Mr Sinnett exuded. I cannot begin to express my thanks for what he did to give my son back the life he very much loved.
