What is Transfer Metatarsalgia?

This is more of a symptom than a condition. It refers to pain felt towards the outside of the forefoot because of the increased load put upon it.

What are the symptoms of Transfer Metatarsalgia?

It is often associated with a condition on the inside of the foot such as Hallux Valgus or Hallux Rigidus. The patient may notice pain, swelling and even callosities on the sole of the foot underneath the lesser metatarsal heads.

How is Transfer Metatarsalgia diagnosed?

This symptom can be identified with a clear history and examination by an expert Foot and Ankle specialist.

What are my options for treatment?

The best way to treat this symptom is to treat the underlying pathology affecting the inside of the foot. These are discussed at length within this section. Other ways to improve the symptoms are orthotics, strapping, lifestyle adaptation and simple analgesia.
