Triple Joint Complex

What is a Triple Joint Complex?

These three joints make up the majority of the hindfoot. They have been mentioned in other parts of this section and can be affected individually or in combination.

What are the symptoms?

Arthritis symptoms are described elsewhere in this section and they are no different in these joints. As one of the joints becomes degenerate, it is common to see the other joints follow suit as more stress is placed upon them as the other stiffens due to the pathology.

How is it diagnosed?

Clinical examination and history form the basis of making an accurate diagnosis. Imaging modalities including X-ray, MRI and CT will also be used to confirm the clinical suspicion.

What are my options for treatment?

Physiotherapy, orthotics and lifestyle adaptations can all improve the symptoms that the patient complains of. When intervention is required, injections are a safe and sensible first-line intervention. If this fails to improve symptoms or if the deformity is the main problem, then isolated or multiple fusions may be required.

A triple fusion, where all three of these joints are fused, is a very powerful procedure to correct the foot deformity. It can also significantly improve pain ad function.
