Knee Pain
When a patient presents with knee pain, a thorough assessment is required to obtain an accurate diagnosis. If someone’s knee pain is due to osteoarthritis, then one potential option may be an injection of hydrogel (Arthrosamid®).
Arthrosamid® is a non-surgical treatment used to provide long-lasting pain relief and improved mobility for patients with knee osteoarthritis.
What is Arthrosamid®?
Arthrosamid® is a hydrogel injection that acts within the knee joint, reducing pain and stiffness caused by osteoarthritis. Unlike traditional treatments, this non-degradable hydrogel integrates with the synovial membrane, decreasing joint stiffness and providing extended relief.

Potential Benefits of Arthrosamid® Injections
- Long-lasting pain relief – Helps reduce discomfort caused by osteoarthritis.
- Improved joint function – Enhances mobility by improving pain.
- Minimally invasive – A simple outpatient procedure with minimal downtime.
- Alternative to surgery – May delay the need for surgical intervention.
Is Arthrosamid® Right for You?
Arthrosamid® is suitable for patients with knee osteoarthritis who are experiencing pain, stiffness, or reduced mobility. It may be an option if:
- You want long-term pain relief without surgery.
- You have not found sufficient relief from pain medications, physiotherapy, or other injections.
- You are looking for a low-risk, minimally invasive treatment option.
A consultation with one of our orthopaedic specialists will help determine if Arthrosamid® is the right treatment for you.
It is important to bear in mind that there is no cure for osteoarthritis but successful treatment with Arthrosamid® may reduce or relieve your knee pain. You should also bear in mind that your knee osteoarthritis may not improve and, in some cases, may get worse.
What to Expect – Before, During, and After Treatment
Before the Injection
Your consultant will assess your knee condition, review your medical history and up-to-date imaging, and ensure that Arthrosamid® is suitable for you. Other treatment options will be discussed to allow you to weigh up the risks and benefits so that you can make an informed choice.
Arthrosamid® does not degrade over time and remains in the synovial tissue. It is therefore classified as an implant and antibiotics are prescribed for you to take approximately one hour prior to the injection to reduce the theoretical risk of infection.
During the Procedure
- The injection is performed in a sterile clinical setting under ultrasound guidance.
- A local anaesthetic is used to ensure comfort.
- The Arthrosamid® hydrogel is injected directly into the knee joint.
- The procedure typically takes less than 30 minutes.
After the Procedure
- It is recommended that for the first 48 hours you allow time to recover and rest with normal day to day activities.
- You should avoid any strenuous weight-bearing activities (e.g. running, tennis or long walks) during the first 2 weeks after your injection.
- We recommend guided physiotherapy as part of your Arthrosamid® recovery — click here find out more about the rehab programme.
- You may experience mild swelling or discomfort for a few days/week.
- The full benefits of Arthrosamid® may take a few weeks or in some cases a few months to develop as the hydrogel integrates with the joint.
