Coccydynia is pain in the coccyx which is located at the base of the spine.
Common causes of coccydynia include trauma, repetitive coccygeal ligament strain (causing tendinopathy – similar to that of tennis elbow), childbirth, and pelvic floor dysfunction. In some cases, no clear cause can be identified.
What are the symptoms of coccydynia?
The primary symptom of coccydynia is localized pain at the coccyx. The pain is often worse during sitting, prolonged periods of standing, or transitioning from sitting to standing. Coccydynia can interfere with daily activities and disturb sleep,
How is coccydynia diagnosed?
Thorough clinical assessment is the key to diagnosis of coccydynia. Imaging including XR or MRI scan may be undertaken on a bespoke basis to inform management.
What are the treatment options for coccydynia?
Management of coccydynia is mainly non-operative. This includes the use of cushioned seats or pillows designed to relieve pressure on the coccyx, physical / manual therapy to strengthen / release pelvic floor muscles, anti-inflammatory medications for pain relief, and heat or ice therapy. A steroid injection may also be administered to alleviate symptoms. Surgical intervention to remove the coccyx (coccygectomy) may be considered in selected cases if non operative measures fail to improve symptoms.
