Nick is a Consultant Spine Surgeon practising at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and King Edward VII Hospital. He delivers a high volume elective and emergency spine practice encompassing all aspects of adult spinal surgery including degenerative pathologies, spinal trauma, spinal oncology and adult spinal deformity. Nick adopts a patient–centred, evidence – based approach to deliver a bespoke service. He is a strong advocate of patient empowerment and shared decision – making, and offers both operative and non – operative interventions to achieve the best outcomes for his patients.

 

AREAS OF EXPERTISE

Conditions treated include degenerative disc disease, disc prolapse, spinal stenosis, upper and lower limb radiculopathy, back pain, sciatica, myelopathy, spondylolisthesis, coccydynia, spinal trauma, spinal oncology, adult spinal deformity 

Treatments offered include spinal injections, spinal decompression, lumbar discectomy, spinal fusion and minimally invasive surgery.  Nick has extensive experience in robotics and navigation in spinal surgery

    TRAINING & QUALIFICATIONS

    Qualifications: MBChB BEng FRCS (Tr&Orth)

    Nick graduated in Mechanical Engineering from University College, London before subsequently graduating in Medicine from Edinburgh University.  He undertook higher surgical training in Trauma and Orthopaedics in Oxford, and completed his training in 2019. He completed a Fellowship in Paediatric Spinal Deformity in Oxford in 2020, and a combined Neurosurgical and Orthopaedic Fellowship in Complex Adult Spine Surgery in Vancouver, Canada in 2021.  He also completed an academic attachment at the Hospital for Special Surgery, New York in 2023.

    RESEARCH, PUBLICATIONS, TEACHING

    • Nick is widely published in peer reviewed journals, is regularly invited to speak at at both national and international conferences and teaches within the University of Oxford
    • As Clinical Lead for the Oxford Metastatic Spine Service Nick is currently driving research into the identification and treatment of early metastatic spinal disease alongside global academic collaborators
    • Nick has a particular research interest in the application of biomechanics to spinal surgery and its application in improving patient outcomes
    • As Oxford Spine Surgery Fellowship co – director, Nick is an enthusiastic and accomplished trainer on the Oxford Trainee Rotation and has co – authored a textbook for FRCS candidates
    • Nick is an active member of the British Association of Spinal Surgeons and AO Spine
